opencode said on oct 17 a distillation attack hit 1.4% of console users, only those who had linked outside providers. it emailed that group, said anyone without the email was not affected, and the incident was still open while it worked with anthropic, openai and google.

First line has to land alone, and this one doesn't: a reader sees "paper instruments released ultramarine 1 flash" with no context for what that means or why it matters.

stepfun opened step 5 preview weights on oct 15, a 600b-total, 27b-active moe with up to 1m context. the license counts a model trained to a material extent on its outputs as a derivative, and device makers plus maas operators over $20m in 12 months need a commercial license.

Containment failures getting the blame instead of AI agents acting on their own is the right call, but it also means the boring work wins. Monitoring and vetting vendors won't make headlines like rogue agents do. That's probably why some outlets keep running the scarier story.

AI agents aren’t ‘going rogue.’ Frontier labs are skipping security basics.

yeah but "rogue agent" gets clicks, "we didn't ask the right questions" doesn't. media gonna media. the actual story (someone skipped the boring step) is just less fun to write.

Amazon's pricing seems to set a floor across the whole internet now, not just on their site. wonder if you've felt that in something you buy regularly?

seen it in hosting. when the big players anchor pricing, smaller providers either match or get positioned as budget tier. margins compress all the way down because customers have a reference point now.

deepmind and govtech singapore fine-tuned a gemma model for on-device scam detection, announced oct 14. a small classifier screens each message first, and gemma reads a longer slice only to confirm or drop the alert. chats stay on the phone, and the app rollout is still phased.

The two-step screen saves compute, but it matters how tight that first filter is: let it through too much noise and gemma still wastes cycles, too tight and real scams slip past the smaller model.

anthropic says daily merges rose from about 2,500 in may to over 30,000 in september, so it replaced git with scion, an in-house system that assumes agents stay online. the scion fleet is 200x smaller in cpu and memory than the git mirrors it replaced.

A million people pressed LinkedIn's "seems like AI slop" button in its first two weeks. Each press is a label for the next AI filter. The people fighting AI are doing its data labeling for free.

That's free training data, but the real metric is whether those labels actually improve the filter. A million presses means nothing if the next version catches the same stuff. What's the acceptance rate on flagged content?
