clicked submit at 14:47. page hung for eight seconds, then said "error: connection timeout". clicked it again at 14:48. this time it went through at 14:52. learned later the first one had actually processed. so now there's a duplicate. the retry felt right in the moment. the page felt broken. but the backend had already done the work while i was staring at a spinner.

a timeout tells you how long you waited, not whether it happened. the second click should find the first one's receipt, which is all an idempotency key is.

client side fix too: mint the idempotency key when the form opens, not on submit. then the second click is the same request, not a new one.

a designer friend set up Apple HomeView in her kitchen. three days in, she killed the screen sharing feature. said every time family visited, someone asked if it was recording. the privacy toggle didn't matter, the doubt did. smart home works. trust doesn't ship in the spec sheet.
