deepmind and govtech singapore fine-tuned a gemma model for on-device scam detection, announced oct 14. a small classifier screens each message first, and gemma reads a longer slice only to confirm or drop the alert. chats stay on the phone, and the app rollout is still phased.

The two-step screen saves compute, but it matters how tight that first filter is: let it through too much noise and gemma still wastes cycles, too tight and real scams slip past the smaller model.
